Good to know

Got questions? Dam right.

From getting started to connecting your bank, here’s what you need to know.

Getting started

What exactly is Dam?

Dam is a budgeting and expense tracker that helps you see what comes in, what goes out, and what’s left. Track spending, build budgets, and work toward your financial goals, all in one place. Dam is built by SmartFinanceNerd LLC.

Is Dam right for me?

If you’ve ever wondered where your paycheck went, struggled to stick to a budget, or wanted a clearer picture of your finances, Dam is built for you. Whether you’re managing money on your own or with someone else, you can start simple and add more tools as you need them.

What can I track?

Keep track of income, expenses, budgets, and savings or net-worth goals. You can also explore spending patterns and financial trends with Growth, or automatically import transactions from connected bank accounts with Flow.

Do I need to be good at budgeting?

Not at all. Start by recording what you earn and spend, then create budgets for the categories that matter to you. Dam helps you see how your spending compares with your plan throughout the month. No complicated spreadsheets required.

Plans and features

Can I use Dam for free?

Absolutely. Starter is free and lets you track up to 50 new transactions per month, with one account and 30 days of history. No paid subscription is required to get started. Upgrade when you’re ready for unlimited transactions and additional features.

What’s the difference between plans?

Starter is for getting started with manual tracking. Builder unlocks unlimited transactions and CSV imports. Growth adds advanced analytics and additional financial planning tools. Flow includes everything in Growth, plus automatic transaction imports through optional bank connections. Choose the level of control and convenience that works for you.

Do I have to connect my bank?

Nope. You can track your finances manually without connecting a bank. Builder and above also support CSV imports. If you’d rather automate transaction tracking, Flow lets you securely authorize connections to supported financial institutions through Plaid. Bank linking is always optional.

Can I share Dam with my household?

Yes. Dam offers Solo for one person, Duo for two, and Household for up to five seats. You can choose the setup that fits your situation and manage shared finances together in one workspace.

How much does Dam cost?

You can start with Starter for free. Monthly Solo plans are $3.99 for Builder, $5.99 for Growth, and $8.99 for Flow. Duo and Household options are available at different prices, and annual billing is also offered. The pricing page compares every seat size.

Privacy and billing

How does Dam protect my information?

Your privacy matters. SmartFinanceNerd does not sell your personal information, and Dam uses HTTPS encryption to protect information in transit. Connecting a bank is optional and requires your authorization through Plaid. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so review the privacy policy for details.

What happens if I cancel?

You can cancel from billing settings. Paid features stay available through the end of the period you already paid. After that, the account returns to Starter: up to 50 new transactions a month, 1 visible account, and 30 days of history. Older transactions and entries on extra accounts stay saved and are hidden while you are on Starter.

Can I try Dam without paying?

Yes. Starter is free and includes manual tracking, with up to 50 new transactions a month, 1 account, and 30 days of history. You can upgrade when you need more.

Do I need Flow to use Dam?

No. Dam works without connecting a bank account. Flow adds optional live bank feeds and automatic transaction imports.

What’s the difference between Builder and Growth?

Builder is unlimited everyday tracking, CSV imports, budgets, and manual tagging. Growth adds advanced analytics, projections, custom budgets, categorization rules, and the rental, FIRE, and compensation workspaces.

Can I switch plans later?

Yes, from billing settings. Moving to a higher plan charges a prorated amount for the rest of the current billing period. Moving to a lower plan keeps the current plan through the end of this period, and the lower price starts on the next renewal. There is no refund for unused time on a higher plan.
